Delivering Controlled Precision: AODC North Redevelopment

The Alcon Advanced Optic Device Center (AODC) facility manufactures Intraocular lens (IOL) products and delivery systems for the surgical division. The project consolidates the two separate structures into a single facility, streamlining all IOL production spaces and ensuring the product remains in controlled production areas before proceeding to sterilization and final packaging for distribution.

AODC North Consolidation

Two earlier segments of the facility, completed in 2009 and 2011, established core site and building systems and were sited for future expansion. This phase established a centralized area for final packaging.

The design and construction of the facility consolidation began in 2023, as a Design-Build effort with ECBuild. This consolidation executes EwingCole’s 2021 master plan, relocating manufacturing, support, and administrative functions from the south site. The construction was executed in three phases to allow the facility to operate with little to no disruption to operations.

Phase 1 renovated the existing shell to enable conversion of the high-bay warehouse into an ISO 7-controlled-environment production space, with supporting mechanical areas. Construction of the core and shell of a new addition to house a majority of the remaining relocated functions also began at this time. Phase 2 focused on the interior fit-out of critical production spaces relocated from the South Faculty. Phase 3 will complete the fit-out and renovation of various support spaces while commissioning and validation are performed on the Phase 2 spaces.
